Explanatory article on London Congestion Charge changes: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jOPIwNKPXujnZyjVamzD8AT_1lqAD8UOUVQ07 . Are gas guzzlers rightly the first in the firing line for action in the UK?

  1. If you can afford the charges at an NCP car park in Central London then £100 on top is no real deterrent.

  2. Gas guzzlers suck and especially in built up areas. Go Ken.

  3. This is not Livingstone's idea it is the Green party whose support he needs to remain in power, come may the car drivers can vote him and the idiotic Green's out of office

  4. It is a great idea. And while he has the stage how about fuel rationing? Why should some people continue to waste a dwindling resource while others try to use as little as possible? If we were in a life raft with only a few liters of water it would be rationed so everybody gets a fair share.

  5. Not old enough to remember the accumulations of horse f***s that plagued all large cities 100 years ago? Sounds like a good place for expanded public trans.!

  6. Get him out hes a crook.

  7. gas guzzlers were not the first in the firing line.

but people arn't interested in all the other stuff that has been done to make London a better place to live and reduce the environmental impact.

it is not mainly about reducing CO2, but the particulates, especially from deisel that kill 1,000 Londoners prematurly each year. hence the controls & charges for lorries.

And if we changed to electric vehicles the place would be a lot quieter & less stressfull and dirty, and people could still have exciting prestige cars, big limos like the KAZ http://www.speedace.info/dr_shimizu_kaz.... 190mph 8 seater, or the Phoenix SUT http://www.phoenixmotorcars.om that can be recharged in 10 minutes, or the Tesla, http://www.teslamotors.com built by Lotus that does 0-60 in 4 secs, and delivery vehicles http://www.smithelectricvehicles.com/pro...

and westminster will provide street side recharging points, possibly free, http://www.batteryvehiclesociety.org.uk/...

so why should noisy smelly infernal combustion engines be allowed? we don't need them.

  8. well he is right, those moaners who have 4x4s complain a lot but i say if you can afford to buy one and fill it up regular then you cannot complain.

  9. Ken Livingstone is one of my favorite people.

I don't believe in any of this 'ozone layer' stuff!

    Maybe he doesn't either?

I do think all our roads are overcrowded and unsafe, all over the UK.

The solution to this is to provide alternative measures to overcrowding by cars.

London has loads of alternatives so why would any one want to drive around London in their own car?

Most other  city's in the UK do not have alternative reliable transport  , so we use the car!

Is that really so difficult to work out????

Any one living well outside of London area can drive to the nearest station or tube , leave the car and get on a train or whatever.

Any one living in the sticks outside Birmingham has no chance of getting into Birmingham with out using the car.

                                 Well done Ken!

  10. Regardless of AGW, anyone that's tried to drive in crowded European streets should be glad to rid them of large vehicles that make parking and maneuvering a pain.

  11. I assume red is is party not his hair.  The new red is green.

  12. When you ban guns, you're at the mercy of those in power...this is just the beginning.  Watch and see what they think up over the next 10 years.  He's not going to go for the jugular...what they're after is a slow bleed (you don't kill off your means of survival).

  13. Good for London.  First the congestion tax and now a gaz guzzler tax.

I like it - if people want to drive unnecessarily large cars (i.e. Land Rovers), emit unnecessarily large amounts of CO2, and put the entire planet in danger, make them pay out the nose to do it.

  14. If he thinks CO2 is so dirty, maybe he should stop exhaling.
