Is Rick Carlisle a defensive or offensive coach?

I'm a Phoenix fan, but I'm somewhat a fan of the Mavericks. I was wondering if Rick Carlisle was known as an offensive of defensive coach. I don't really see the point to teach the mavericks offense considering they have j kidd to run it. In his press conference as new head coach he preached defense, so does he? Were the 03-04 Pacers known for defense? If so, do you thin the mavericks will do the same?
