  2. The Lineal Champion is the man who beat the man who beat the man who beat John L Sullivan who was the toughest son of a ***** in the house.

Technically the Lineal Title stopped after Marciano Retired. But if you keep it going by passing it to the next in line.

Then Lennox Lewis was the last Lineal champion, He took it from Briggs, who took it from Foreman, who took it from Moorer, who took it from Holyfield, who took it from Bowe, who took it from Holyfield, who took it from Douglas, who took it from Tyson and so on and so on. I beleive the Lineal title since Marciano started at Floyd Patterson and has been passed on ever since.

It is going to take a long time for the Lineal title to be considered legit again.

Ring Magazine is usually the most unbiased when it comes to naming champions. But they are not a sanctioning body so in the real world it doesn't count except for bragging rights.

Hopefully that will change and Ring will be considered the legit title. THE RING CHAMPION OF THE WORLD. I like the sound of that.

  3. Yes, today the Ring Magazine championship is equal to the lineal championship.  In today's world of sanctioning body madness, the Ring title tries to bring boxing back to the simpler days when there was only one champion per division, and it has worked because if you look at all of the Ring champions, in each division, they garner the most respect and are considered THE champions.  The only way that you can lose the lineal title is by losing it in a title fight, moving to another weight division permanently, or retiring, and those are the only ways that you can lose the Ring title, hence making it the lineal championship.  A good example would be the light heavyweight division.  Right now, Joe Calzaghe is the lineal and Ring Magazine champion at light heavyweight.  He does not own any sanctioning body's belt (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO) at that weight, but he is still considered the true champion in that division because he beat Bernard Hopkins.  Hopkins won the title from Antonio Tarver, and Tarver won the title from Roy Jones, Jr.  All of those fighters were lineal and Ring Magazine champs because they "beat the man who beat the man", and what I mean by that is, you have to BEAT the champion in order to BE the champion.

  4. Kinda. Lineal means that their is a succession in the championship title. The ring champ is one that has been recognized as the champion but that doesn't make them the undisputed champion, that is where lineage comes in. take the heavyweight division for example. Vitaly Klitchko was the ring champion in 2005 but he was not the lineal/undisputed champion. Ring is more of a widely accepted fighter being the champ to avoid confusion in the weight class. because we all know how politics of boxing works and how easy it is to become "champion" look at lewis he was the lineal champ even after he was stripped of the IBF belt for not fighting byrd. Bottom line Ring=widely accepted Lineal=undisputed sometimes the two belong to the same fighter but not always
