Question:

Is Roger Goodell misusing his authority as Commissioner in regards to Brett Favre's reinstatment?

Brett Favre sent his request for reinstatement days ago and Goodell's office is admittedly sitting on it. If a man is able to work and wants to work it is the marketplace that should decide whether he does or not. The Commissioner is doing the bidding of ownership and superseding what should be a fundamental right of the players. Goodell's latest action wreaks of cowardice and is frankly outrageous in my opinion.

This is not a question of whether Favre should play again or not. Again in my view it's the marketplace's function to decide that, imo. But my contention is this: To basically bar a person from the Possibility of earning a living thru deliberate inaction is immoral. How do you feel about Commissioner Goodell's handling of Brett Favre's unretirement?

Thank you.

  1. Absolutely. GOoDell does enjoy playing god.

  2. I really think he should step in and force the Packers to make a move NOW.

Let's be honest, the Packers are black-balling Brett Favre, and holding him hostage. They can't trade him because their asking price is too high. They don't want to release him because they know he'll come back to bite them in the A$$ with another team. They don't want him to start for their team because they're too d**n stubborn to budge off of Aaron Rodgers, and even let him compete for the job. And last but not least, they are now trying give him a BRIBE, not a phony "marketing deal", him to not even play in the NFL anymore.

I never thought I would say this about the team I love, but I'm completely disgusted at how spineless, and cowardly they are handling this. If they really didn't want Brett Favre, RELEASE HIM ALREADY! All I've heard is "Aaron Rodgers is the guy, Aaron is our quarterback" So cut the ties between Favre and MOVE ON, if they're so d**n confident in Rodgers, which frankly, I'm not. They are too stubborn to bring Brett back, yet too cowardly to cut ties with him.

Roger Goodell HAS to do something about it. Reinstate Favre, and let this saga finally be resolved. Who cares if it's a media circus in Green Bay, the Packers brought this upon themselves, and they have NO ONE else to blame. If they were too cowardly to release him, and too stubborn to reduce their asking offer, because they're too GUTLESS to give him away, then they deserve the circus. And quite frankly, I hope the very first pass Aaron throws in the Preseason is a interception, just so me and millions of others can BOO at the top of our lungs, chant "Bring Brett Back" and have the front office of the Packers completely HUMILIATED.

I had to blow off a lot of steam on this topic.

  3. I don't think Roger Goodell is misusing his NFL commisioner duties because he is letting the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre work it out and also Brett Favre is considering the 10yr/25 million dollar deal if he stays retired.

  4. he is giving the packers time not like they need it because they have had since march to deal with this soap opera.  he should have striped the patriots 2001 superbowl ring and title to and suspend bilacheck for cheating and taken away all of there draft picks

  5. He has always abused his powers as commish.

  6. I think he is doing the right thing.  If it gets out of hand, the packers and favre will both be paying a hefty fine, Goodell's fine will be based on what type of reason was stated as to why Goodell should do anything, as well as why favre did not go to the players union.

So, the onous is on Favre to finish his current contract, and sit on the bench as a back-up to the second string and starter.  Its up to the packers to make him another offer to replace his current one and its up to Favre to look elsewhere if he does not take up the new offer.

  7. Well, I have to agree that Commission Goodell is misusing his power in regards to the Brett Favre situation.  Goodell is the commissioner.  Favre is a football player, and if he wants to come back he shouldn't have to go through Goodell.  He is Packer property until he signs the dotted line saying that he wants out.  So what I'm saying is, he should be speaking directly with the organization rather than going to Goodell about.  Roger has proven to be a very tough commissioner in handing down punsihment to players.  However he shouldn't have a hand in this situation with Brett Favre.  It should be strictly between he and the Packers.  Goodell should not have that much power where he can tell a player that you have to hand me the re-instatement players.  Goodell has his job to do, and he needs to but out of the Packers business.. He needs to let them handle it accordingly and do his own job..

  8. He is the same guy who destroyed the spygate evidence, with that I wouldn't be surprised.

  9. Your view, I think a little misguided. First off, the market that you speak of, is the Green Bay Packers and Packers ONLY. They have his sole rights for the next two years. If he wants to play, he has to play with them. The problem is that the Packers don't really want him, but don't want him to go just anywhere. They want to trade to a team that will affect the Packers the least.

Goodell is trying to mitigate a bad situation by trying to avoid a horrible distraction to the league and a team.

If your angry at anyone, it should be the Packers, they are the ones trying to limit Brett's opportunities.

Sorry Friendly, but your wrong.  The Commish is EXACTLY who Brett has to go through. When you file for retirement (Which Brett did) then you have to file vis the league office for reinstatement.  This is bigger than just the Packers and Farve.  We have tampering charges with another team, you have the Packers offering a 25M deal to NOT play- and with that you have some teams claiming that the no-play deal must count against the salary cap because the Packers are gaining a roster benefit and taking an active player off the open market.  So you see, Goodell has to be involved in this situation.

  10. I agree with you because i always felt that Goodell was for the owners and coaches. If you look at recently actions towards players he is a TYRANT. But is soft on coachs (Bellicheck and Andy Reid) Also he cowards in front of owners. ( Jerry Jones having a talk with Goddell about Adam Jones, suddenly he is temporary reinstated). But I honestly think Ted Thompson is putting the pressure on Goddell to make sure Bret is not a packers as well as a football player in 2008 and beyond. I do feel that Bret made a bad decison retiring because he had to know the Packers were waiting to move on and were looking for the opportunity to cut ties without looking like the bad guys. I really think that Thompson wanteds to turn up the heat on Goddell so this favre saga can go way but I think the Packer nation is breathing down his throats. Because that team was one game way from the superbowl and if they don't repeated or at least advance in wins ALOT of FANS will be calling for the PACKERS orgainzations HEAD!!!

  11. Here we go with Favre again.  No i do not think he is misusing he authority as Comish.  What happens if Favre doesnt come back.  Goodell just wants to make sure that Favre is going to come back before he signs off on the reinstatement.
