  1. Yes, Romania is a beautiful place, even I would call it "ANYTHING BUT GOTHIC"

Because of its rich history, many medieval constructions are still preseved as PATRIMONIU - including castles, mansions - the majority located in the western part of Romania, the famous TRANSYLVANIA (TRANS SILVAE = through the forests, in Latin language)

I think this is the place you would like best from my country: BRASOV, SIBIU, SIGHISOARA, CLUJ....and many other cities with old churches, old buildings, many ruins of old civilisation.

Haunted places, no problem: all you have to do is to take some GARLIC in your pocket and maybe a small cross around your neck, to protect you. A red thread of wool tied around your left wrist is A MUST!

In Romania, we have a wonderful folklore - many ghosts, many spirits, werewolves, boogey man - called BAUBAU, MOROI - a type of vampire, ogres, demons (STRIGOI), IELE (some virgin fairies that kills young men who see them dancing naked at night in the woods), witches....

Bram Stoker made DRACULA famous for other reasons that the real ones.

DRACULA (=son of the devil as  DRACUL= the devil, in Romanian language), Vlad Tepes, was a brave ruler here, around 1450 A. D., he fought against the Turkish Army, showing no mercy, impaling our ennemies....this is how we can explain the nickname VLAD THE IMPALER).

In Romania, we have great respect for Vlad Tepes (pronounced: TZEPESH) as a leader and saviour of the country.

Bram Stoker mixed Romanian folklore and the legendary figure of a Romanian hero, creating a controversial piece of art.

no, Bela Lugosi is not "celebrated" in Romania so we'd never thought to make a "memorial" (!) for him and we will never do that - maybe Hollywood Studios must think about that :)

The BRAN CASTLE - as we like to call it (the DRACULA's castle - for tourists) is not haunted during the day, so you can visit without any fear....Haunting starts right after midnight and no one is allowed inside the building, reason: security!

The castle is located right in the heart of Romania, close to the city of Brashov - and it is a splendid place, where the queen of Romania liked to spend her summers. She slept very well and never reported any intruder in her bedroom.

If you want to be scared while visiting Romania, ok, let me scare you:

WATCH YOUR POCKETS - day and night!

Don't accept to drink anything from strangers when you travel at night (especially, if you travel by train) - Romanian drinks are strong, they can put you to sleep... :)

Never explore alone unknown neighbourhoods - you can never tell what GHOST will try your blood!

...and don;t forget garlic is good, but sometimes not enough! :)

ah, by the way: YOU ARE WELCOME TO VISIT ROMANIA, but first tell me: WHAT IS YOUR BLOOD TYPE?

Ha, ha, ha....Hi, hi, hi...where is my broom, I must go now!

  2. Gothic, and goth clubs are NOT the same thing...I hope you realize that...Romania is a poor country, at this time, and that makes it an inexpensive place to visit.  Yes, Bram Stoker was inspired by Vlad the Impaler, (though I'm pretty sure, he was never there - he did it all on heresay).  Vlad's castle still stands and is a big tourist attraction...I absolutely HAVE to go there someday, myself!

Yes, I think Romania would be a GREAT place to go, though I'm not sure about any other mansions and haunted places.  Vlad's castle is supposed to be haunted.  If you want lots of hauntings, go to England and Scotland!  Lots of castles, lots of haunted places.  Do both while you are young and can travel a lot!  Have fun!  You'll be telling stories for years to come.

  3. It is a very beautiful place, although not exactly 'gothic'.

Dracula was inspired by Vlad Tepes (the impaler) known for all his cruel punishments. If you go to Romania, you'll obviously want to travel through Transilvania and visit Bran's Castle. This is known widely as 'dracula's castle' but Vlad has never really spent any time there, except for 2 nights that he was locked in the dungeon.

Transilvania also has many medieval cities. Sibiu is absolutely gorgeous.

Romania is filled with castles, but I don't exactly know of any haunted ones. The Peles castle is a popular tourist attraction.

There's just so much to say about Romania, I just can't write it all out here.

    ps- some popular 'goth' clubs.

    She's In Parties, Bucharest, Romania

    Cafe Umbra, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

    Carpe Noctem, Sibiu, Romania
