Is Romeo Crennel the right choice for the Kansas City Chiefs? – Part 1
Romeo Crennel took over as the new head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, thus ending the one-month long wait by the Chiefs to hire a new coach.
Crennel came a long way forward to prove his calibre as a head coach before being hired.
The challenges he faced were immense and though he did not have a perfect short tenure, yet his performance was ample enough to prove his worth in just three games he coached.
It does appear that Chiefs' management came a bit hard on Todd Haley, having him fired after the team failed to reach the playoffs.
Haley’s failure had been preceded by the success last season, when he led the Chiefs to the playoffs.
However, failing to repeat that performance was not taken easily by the General manager Scott Pioli who was bent on making it to the playoffs this year.
The Chiefs had come down to 5-8, near to being eliminated from the playoffs. So Pioli had Haley sacked and Crennel, the then defensive coordinator hurled in as the interim coach for the remainder of the three games.
Reaching the playoffs was still a challenge for Pioli, who said that mathematically there was still a chance.
Crennel was the only man who could see to his dream coming true. And he almost did it.
Under Crennel, Chiefs emerged as a completely changed team, surprising everyone with their amazing performances in their last three games.
Crennel had made it clear that he wanted to be the permanent head coach of the Chiefs and in the next three games, he proved that his desire was justified.
It was at this crucial stage that Crennel took over at 5-8, determined to win the next three games to make it to the playoffs.
Crennel had formerly been a defensive coordinator for the Chiefs and had proved his calibre by transforming Chiefs' defence into their biggest strength.
Beating the unbeaten Green Bay Packers was an impressive beginning as Crennel made his debut.
The 19-14 win over Packers had been no easy task. No one could have imagined the Chiefs to rebound from five defeats in past six games to beat the Packers.
A victory over the unbeaten Green Bay Packers had every one stunned and surprised.
Chiefs under Crennel looked a completely changed organisation, suddenly full of energy and determination. It was the courage and strength that Crennel showed on that day that made the Chiefs win the game.
The determination showed by Crennel was impressive and surely made his day to prove himself as the dominating coach.
"Everybody had marked it off as a win for the Packers, but those guys in the locker room, they're football players. They decided they were not going to lay down, they were not going to give up, so they went out and played a tremendous
game." Crennel said.
The speed with which the Chiefs were progressing had Pioli hoping for playoffs.
However, the optimism was dealt an end blow as Chiefs failed to repeat their last game performance against the Oakland Raiders, who had them routed, 16-13, to deprive them of a playoff opportunity.
Keeping in mind the close call the Chiefs had and the desire for revenge by which the Raiders were driven, a border line loss didn’t seem to hurt Crennel’s chances for the future head coach much.
