Oakland Raiders was humiliated by a 28-0 loss sustained at the hands of Kansas City Chiefs in October and looking for a chance to settle the score. So with Raiders coming out hard on Chiefs, the loss did not seem to affect Crennel’s future with the Chiefs.
Crennel was not to be taken aback easily. He found the chance to strike back in his next game and it was not an easy task.
It was exactly a win over the Denver Broncos in the season’s final game that Crennel saw his chances increasing.
Broncos, led by Tim Tebow were no easy match but the Chiefs had added vigour and determination to their team.
A victory over Broncos with the much hyped character of Tebow, had everyone talking about Crennel.
Crennel proved himself and that was without doubt a reality.
Among all the possible contenders for the head coach slot, Crennel looked the most deserving of all, and that included being better than former Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach, Jack Del Rio, and Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator, Joe Philbin.
Coming up with a 2-1 track record despite injuries sustained by key players like Cassel, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki and Eric Berry, surely called for him to be the new coach.
It wasn’t just these three games that Crennel drives his strength from. Earlier on as the defensive coordinator for the Chiefs, he transformed Chiefs’ defence into its biggest strength.
Even Pioli recognised him as a possible contender, saying that Crennel would be interviewed as he spoke of the “respect” that Crennel enjoyed in the locker room.
"I know the respect Romeo commands in the locker room." Pioli had said earlier on.
Two Chiefs' players, Tamba Hali and Bill Muir had already voiced their support for Crennel, saying that they wanted him retained as their future head coach. The ground was thus set for Crennel to take over.
What was a dream for Crennel as he had announced earlier on was made a reality when Kansas signed him for three years.
Crennel has had other experiences too. He worked with the Cleveland Browns as the head coach, managing a contract extension too, but had to leave once Browns declined to a 4-12 dismal performance.
Crennel was determined to be a head coach again once he left Cleveland Browns, talking of his “competitive nature” and “competitive energy” that he said would help him prove his claims one day.
That experience had Crennel polished as a head coach, even though his tenure with the Browns ended in a disaster.
"I know how to get it done and I think the experience will make me better." Crennel said.
The 64-year-old coach has also worked for New England Patriots, under Bill Belichick, and for New York Giants, under Ray Perkins and Ray Handley.
During his tenure with the Patriots and Giants, these two teams made to the Super Bowl championship game five times.
Crennel has had close ties with Pioli in the past. The two helped Patriots win three Super Bowl titles when they were working together in New England.
Crennel has also served New York Jets. All this extensive experience played a pivotal role in helping Crennel polish his capabilities as a head coach.
Hence, when Crennel obtained the chance to prove himself, he did it. And it took just three games, rather than a whole season, for him to make people realise that he deserved what he was asking for.
