Is Russia going back to Socialism? No. Totalitarianism? Absolutely.

It appears to be slipping into a form of Fascism.

Putin's Russia has more in common with Mussolini's Italy than it does with the USSR. I hesitate to compare it to Hitler's Germany because of the very strong negative connotations. Putin has not yet done anything based on racial superiority or hate, so I will use Italy.

I don't know if you have had the occasion to see Disney's classic the Beauty and the Beast. Obviously Georgia was not the beauty.  Hopefully, a petite European country can soothe the aggression and anger of the Russian Beast while teaching it manners.  You know, dress Putin up to at least look like a diplomat that knows a few steps.

To some extent, I believe, it should. At the height of cold war, both sides were cautious of flexing military muscle. After the disintegration of erswhile USSR, world has seen naked show of strength blatant use of military might by USA.

If Russia goes back to it's old ways - it might create a balance.

That depends. Can America get over the fact that we're not in the Cold War anymore? Indeed, can America even contemplate a future where things don't just lay themselves out in black and white, with "democracy vs. non-democracy" as the only choices? I didn't think so.

I mean, why shouldn't it? Russia lost a great deal during the previous wars, and had to lose the territories which it coerced out of various weaker nations. But as soon as it recovers, why ever not?

Needs to go back with a fierce determination for vengeance...
