Ryanair is for real. the prices are very low and they can afford it thanks to government's incentives to boost tourism. air fares are low but they charge high for food and drinks on board. It's definitely worth it though and thanks to these low prices you can afford to visit a relative for a short period of time.

Ryanair is for real, but they also really suck. You don't have assigned seats, it's like getting on a bus, and god forbid you should arrive 40 minutes before your plane takes off, they won't let you on (even if you've been waiting in line!). Aer Lingus has similar prices for short-haul trips, and you get an assigned seat, with convenient check in as well. Also the fact that Ryanair flies to airports over an hour away from your 'real' destination adds costs as well-

The prices are real, but they do not include the hidden charges, which usually amount to about 35-40 euro per flight. Then you have a credit card fee for booking, plus you have to pay extra to have check-through luggage (each way), so it adds up. Plus you cannot share weight allowance for your baggage (e.g. between two passengers), it is literally cheaper to buy an extra bag than pay the charges they levy for extra weight.

Having said all that, they still are pretty cheap if you start out at a "free" or "0.1c" airfare.

When you factor in flying into an airport miles from where you want to go, the cost of getting from there to where you really want to go, the higher than other carriers prices for weekends and 'popular' flying times, they're not all that cheap.

If something goes wrong they are brutal.

I will never forget being in Stansted one night at about half ten and they announced the cancellation of one of their flights - I can still see the look on a young father's face as he tried to think what he could do that late at night stuck in Stansted with his two year old child.

It was one cent each way then I had to pay taxes and fees.

dayb4real.  I've flown with Ryanair several times.  If you book in advance, the fares are dirt-cheap.  But, if you wait to book last-minute, then you pay dearly (but still not as much as the big airlines, typically).  They keep costs super-low by flying 1 type jet (fleet of Boeing 737s), no free food or snacks onboard (you buy what you want when the cart comes by), no inflight magazines or pillows.  They normally fly from smaller airports with lower costs, and deplane, tidy, and ready to fly back out again in less than 30 minutes.  It's cheap and safe, no frills.  I like it!
