Is SILKWORM "FARMING" usually a personal hobby or can it become a lucrative business? thanks in advance..?

As a hand spinner I love working with silk.  It makes for beautiful yarns or blended with other fibers like mohair, llama or wool.  

I wouldn't use the word "Lucrative", but you could make money at it, enough to off set your overhead and but some in your pocket.

There are numerous seasonal wool markets where people who make a business of fibers sell at, they are a lot of fun to attend from both sides of the table.  This is defiantly a cottage business as with most of the fiber related areas.  

Best to live in an area where you can get enough mulberry leaves to support their amazing  appetite.  They will truly eat you out of house and home.

first of all, you need a mulberry tree food source, that is the difficult one in the USA due to where the trees do the best...mostly in the south...it was tried commerically before to provide silk for parachutes during WW11.....secondly, as business, your overhead cost will be high, and most of all, do you have a market for raw silk...and getting and making raw silk takes about 1,000 silk worm cocoons per ounce.....better make a hobby first

I saw this on tv. A family in China has been making silk forever, they eat the bugs! Yes they do! It takes a lot of hand work to raise the caterpillars, take them off the mulberry trees and make the silk.

BIG business on a small scale.you can make good money.It's just finding a company to help

you. Silk farm es are manly in Japan.so is the

production.IF you could get  cash enough to do

magazine advertising.and  a company that will

promote you.you could be a winner.
