Question:

Is Saccharin safe to use?

I ran out of Splenda which I usually use for my morning coffee so I borrowed some sweetener from a neighbor. It happens to be a sweetener made from saccharin and I wanted to know if it was safe to use.

  1. Sugar and honey is a whole lot safer than saccharin. I would not use it. Everyone that I know that used it habitually over the years died from degenerative diseases. Maybe or maybe not related to the saccharin, but why take chances? The sweetener with the lowest glycemic index is Agave syrup. Get at it at a health food store. It tastes great. Although expensive, you don't need very much.

  2. Saccharine has been shown to cause cancer in lab rats... but they gave the rats 1,000 times the dose a human would take, and the human weighs 100 times as much... so the rat got 100,000 time what you got.

So it's not likely. Saccharine was the artificial sweetener of choice for many years. Besides - you used it already, so there's not much you can do but relax.

And why did your neighbor have saccharine? Obviously s/he wasn't worried. And it hasn't been taken off the market...

So chill. You'll be fine. I guarantee it.

  3. The link below has the story of the saccharin ban.  The FDA banned it back in the 70's but Congress removed the ban later because of public (special interest) outcry.  You decide who you trust.
