Sanath is the only player in history of cricket who has not played a selfish innings.

He could have continued playing test cricket but he called it a day and with out a doubt He is a legend and the selectors should learn to respect the supreme and allow them to retire of their own but the news from inner circle is Ranatunga is behind the sacking of Sanath from the day one as he took charge he wanted Sanath out of the team.

Ranatunga is failed as a professional and acted as a true politician.

Sri Lanka had a bad habit of relying on Sanath, and not really batting well. If sanath got out the hole team would get out and lose the game if he batted well then the team would bat well and win.

recently his batting hasn't been the best.

Sri Lanka are trying to build some new players up, and they need to make sure that these young players don't build the same bad habits.

Saying this i don't think he should be thrown out of the team for good, but i think he should give some youngsters a chance. He's getting on in his years. If we hold on to him for to long it will be too hard to re build this team when he retires.
