  1. Teaching abstinence as the one and only rule is like telling somebody "Never get behind the wheel of car!" instead of taking drivers' ed.  Is there a chance that you can still die in an car accident (one of the leading causes of death)?  Sure, but if you know what you're doing, the chances of that are ridiculously slim.  Chances of getting VD is even slimmer.

  2. Yeah...and a cure for aides will be discovered tomorrow, too. ;)

  3. I think a 'have unprotected s*x' position would be worse.

As a parent, especially with young teens, I don't see abstinence as a bad thing.

Parents must take responsibility for educating their children, and this includes responsibility and birth control. The schools obviously have failed.

EDIT: Zilla, you miss my point, if a liberal attitude towards s*x is taken with children, and they are taught s*x is casual, and cheap, the natural result is unwanted pregnancy. It is a self-fulfilling prophesy. It leads to unprotected s*x.

  4. Not realistic.

Its like a Christian trying to teach their kids to never sin.  Sounds great but not realistic.

  5. No.

If you are teaching them abstinence only, you are doing your children a disservice.  Your religion shouldn't keep you from educating your child to be safe.  If you don't, who pays?  The child.

  6. Since Gov. Palin made it an issue by her promotion of abstinence-only s*x Ed, and since that method failed so spectacularly within her own family, for her not to come out and admit that her political position was wrong shows the same IN-ability to learn from a mistake that is so pathologically common in Chimpenfurher Shrub.

Whoever the next leaders of the US are, they do need to show a learning curve that isn't a flat and straight line. Palin clearly failed that test already.

  7. It's a tad late for Sarah to discuss "How is babby formed? How girl get pragnent" with her daughter. Then again, maybe Sarah doesn't know, either?

  8. lol about as realistic as teaching horizon-only geography, really. It's already been said eloquently here - abstinence-only education isn't education. Although I suppose really it's kind of like putting people in a garden and telling them they can eat any d**n thing they like except the fruit of THIS TREE RIGHT HERE and pointing flaming swords at it in case they missed which one is so good they shouldn't touch it.

In other words, for someone who doesn't approve of 'immoral' s*x...it's a pretty d**n perverse position, isn't it?

  9. Abstinence only sexual education isn't education.

95% of males and females in the US have premarital s*x.  You don't gear your s*x education classes towards a 1/20 minority you gear it towards the majority.

I have no problem with abstinence being promoted, but I do have problems with kids not being informed about other forms of birth control.

As other posters have said, I think Sarah Palin's daughter being pregnant before she is married says all we need to say about abstinence only s*x education... if she couldn't get it to work in her own family what chance do kids without actively involved parents have to get it to work?

The US Teenage pregnancy rate *declined* from 1991-2002 every year.  In the last few years it has been on the rise again, which also calls into question Bush's abstinence only s*x education programs.

  10. Results speak for themselves, Her 17 year old is pregnant.  What do you think?  Did it work on her kids?

  11. Haha no! lol

    Harriet

  12. I think the dude above me answers it well.

    LOL

  13. she said no matter what , even if you get raped you should not be allowed to have an abortion ..............that right there made me feel a warm and fuzzy inside....

  14. It is her position; it is something that she thinks will work.  There is no guarantee that it will help, just the same as there is no guarantee that s*x education will work. They are all just proposals.

Just because Palin is who she is doesn't mean that she will not have to deal with issues that parents have to deal with today.  There are a lot of parents who have an image of being upstanding and probably do talk about responsibilities, to only have their kids mess up or do something stupid. That is just life.

  15. No.

  16. I find abstinence to be the most boring position available...

The Kama Sutra has hundreds of positions, after all!

  17. An abstinence only position is unrealistic. I have a teenage son and I do not want him having s*x any time soon and he knows this. But I have also educated him on condom use and if he does decide to have s*x to use one each and every time. I am not going to hide my head in the sand and think that just because I told my son that he is not ready to enter into a sexual relationship that he is going to listen when he is alone with his girlfriend and I am not there and things start to heat up.

  18. I've said it before, I'll say it again.

Abstinence has worked for millions of parents and billions of children!

  19. Her daughter didn't think it was.
