Is Scotch better than Gin?

One of my staff says that gin can be adapted to many cocktails, but another believes that scotch has a free-standing virtue on its own. I welcome your informed comments...

  1. Gin is basically just vodka flavored with juniper berries.  It's pretty raw and harsh, which is why it's always mixed with other things.

Good scotch is meant to be drunk straight, or with a  little water.  It takes years to make properly, and has a much more complex, interesting flavor.  Of course it's a matter of personal preference.  Some people like Kool-Aid.  I'll take a good scotch every time.

  2. They are the same if taken in lagre quantities.

  3. Vodka is the best.

  4. Such monolithic responses.  tsk tsk tsk

On a cold winter night:  scotch or rum, straight.

On a hot summer day:  gin, tonic, ice, lime

    To everything

    turn turn turn

    There is a season

    turn turn turn

And a time to every purpose under heaven

  5. tequilas better then anything else. just better to stick with it.

  6. That's exactly right. Good Scotch is a joy to behold and smooth as silk when aged to perfection. Anything 15 years or older (18 is near perfection) is wonderful. I suggest Glen Livitz or Glen Fiddich (anything with Glen in the name tends to be yummy) I'm a fan of Scotch on the rocks but occasionally I'll take it neat.

However, I wouldn't be caught dead drinking Gin neat (or straight up, if you will). It's taste something akin to isopropol alcohol. It is a good mixer, though. I just hate to waste calories and space on a bunch of fruity mixers and soda pops.
