Is Scratching on an 8-ball shot in "regular" pool a loss?

If a player scratches while attempting to pocket the 8-Ball is that a loss? Is scratching ever an automatic loss? Where can I find detailed "dummy" rules?

  1. If you are just playing normal eight ball, you do loose if you scratch while pocketing the eight.  However, if you play where you get ball in hand if your opponent scratch, then you do not automatically loose.  Most likely you will because you just gave your opponent and huge advantage, especially if they are on the eight too.  Hope this helps, sorry I don't know a specific website, but just scratch on google for rules, and I know you will find some, I know I have before.  Like I said, I just don't remember the website name

  2. No it is a ball in hand foul to the other player

If you scratch and pocket the 8 then its a loss

  3. Assuming that you are playing "by the book", Tim is absolutely correct --- *it is NOT a loss of game if you scratch while "attempting" to shoot the 8-ball.

(*as stated in the BCA Official Rules And Records Book)

In countless establishments however, "Standardized" rules, are NOT always the 'norm'. Your question about "regular" pool has me wondering what your definition of "regular pool" is.

If you are playing by the *book: Scratching on your "attempt" at the 8-ball is NOT a loss.

If you are playing by regular Bar Rules: Scratching on your 8-ball "attempt", would be a loss.

Be sure to ask about, and understand the rules of the house, BEFORE you play.

    Good luck, pool player.

  4. If you are playing "Bank the 8"-then a scratch is not a loss. However, if you are playing old school (not league), scratching while shooting the 8 is a loss.

  5. Pool for Dummies. Get the book... they help soooo much.

  6. It is not a loss to scratch while *attempting* to pocket the 8. It is only a loss when you *pocket* the 8 and scratch on the *same* shot. That's the only time when scratching is an automatic loss. Here are the official rules, not quite "dummy", but it's not that technical either. And "detailed 'dummy'" might be an oxymoron.

  7. One of my favorite terms to hear while walking up to the table... "Its ball in hand" :)

  8. Here is a link that will provide you with the rules for 8 or 9 ball. You will find your answer there, but it is a loss if you scratch while trying to pocket the 8 ball. http://www.poolplayers.com/materials.htm...
