Is Second life a game?

A friend and I were having a discussion about Second life. If second life is a game or just a dressed up chat engine.

I feel second life is a game due to the graphic nature interface and basically the way it operates which is similar to most video games do

He feels it is not a game, just a fancy chat engine because of there is no story to Second life,no plot, and no advancement of any kind. Just a graphical chat interface nothing more, not a game.
