  1. The Sierra Club protects wild areas by buying the land. Nobody can ever harm it again after that. I am a member.

  2. They're not a government agency, they're a nonprofit organization.

Whether or not to join them depends on what your interests are. The Sierra Club is a fairly general organization: it does some direct conservation and some lobbying and similar things. The Sierra Club itself isn't on Charity Navigator (a good website to check out before joining any nonprofit), but the Sierra Club Foundation gets two stars: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cf...

If a general organization is what you're looking for, by all means, join. If you have a more specific interest, then you might want to look for a more specialized organization. If you like direct conservation (buying land to preserve), for example, you might consider the Nature Conservancy, or if you prefer the legislative side of things, the National Resources Defense Council and the Environmental Defense Fund focus more on that side of things. If you have a really specific interest, like rainforests or grizzly bears, there's an organization for everything. (if rainforests or grizzly bears happen to be your interest, check out Rainforest Action Network or Vital Ground.)

  3. They get too much of their money from the fossil fuel industry and also have a history of opposing the only technology we have that can actually replace fossil fuelled power plants.

I'd say they are a good club to avoid.

  4. I joined the Sierra Club.....once.  They immediatly sold my name/address.  I was recieve POUNDS of junk mail every week after joining them.

Want to save trees?  DON'T join the Sierra Club.  By the way, don't believe me?  I challenge any person who does not believe me, to change their name when they sign up, and see just how much junk mail starts to show up in the new name.

So if your name is Sally Smith, when you send in your fee, sign up as Aspen Smith, or something like that.  Your mail box will be FLOODED with mail for Aspen Smith.
