Actually, it is a real place.   It is located in Centralia, PA.

The reason it is so creepy is because it has had underground fires burning. So there, now ya kow!

It's a fictional setting in Konami's title of Silent Hill, they researched ghost town's of america, and combined elements from Japan, to America to create the spooky ghost town of Silent Hill... There is no such thing as a real Silent Hill, it's just a made up setting for characters...

There are plenty of towns that have paranormal experiences..  But if anything happen like it did in Silent Hill There is no way they could have kept that kind of news from the general public and out of of the news..... No Silent Hill came right out of some writers imagination.......

yes, there are a few towns in the coal mining areas of the country - Virginia and such - that DID have to be abandoned because the mines caught on fire and are still burning. But the whole story line and so forth of Silent Hill? Non existant.
