HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) are the best medications available for patients with high cholesterol.  They have been shown to reduce total and low-density (bad) cholesterol by over up to and over 40% on average.  In addition, they have other effects that are not completely understood which lead to improved outcomes (longer and healthier lives) in heart disease, diabetes, and kidney failure.

    Unfortunately in a small portion of the population, it can cause liver damage and muscle breakdown, which is detectable through screening labs and reversible by stopping the medication, but which may, in rare cases not caught early enough, cause some kidney damage.  These side-effects seem to be related more to dose and the specific patient rather than the length of time taken, the specific drug taken, or the extent of cholesterol lowering.
