Is Skype a good substitute for a traditional landline?

I'm looking to add a home phone and I was wondering if I could get all the same benefits with a company like Skype. Does anyone know the pros & cons of going this route? I frequently call 1-800 numbers for work conference calls and I call Germany about 2 times a week.

  1. Not really. It doesn't allow you to call 911, and emergencies can sneak up on you.

Its pretty good, otherwise. If you can, have a cell-phone with you 24/7, so you can call 911.

    Hope I helped!

  2. Skype is not a home phone replacement as it does not include 911 emergency call access.

Other than that, it is perfect solution as a long distance calling service and 2nd phone line.  Especially if you do a lot of Conference calling.  With Skype, you can Conference up to 10 people at once.  Calls to toll-free numbers are free.  Calls between Skype users are free.

Skype also provides Skype for Businesses for companies to share access among employees.

I have used Skype for over 3 years with good results.
