  1. Social Darwinism is a bastardization of theory of evolution.  It takes of biological evolution and applies into a sociological context. Most philosophers, sociologist, etc. believe Social Darwinism to be a load of puckey.  This kind of thinking did lead to the Eugenics movement in the early 20th century. Both are not very popularly held beliefs anymore.

People who are in favor of euthanasia (voluntary), believe that autonomy (having control over your own life) and quality of life issues make it acceptable.  This doesn't fly with other ethical schools of thought.

Wikipedia has a decent philosophy portal, if you want to learn more on the ethical side of things.  It has links to other sources too.  Take care.

  2. Such big words for this forum, but no. Has nothing to do with the fact that we are the current stage in a long line of assention, through millions of years of evolution. As a society, we develope the moral imperatives that allow us to live together, and these change periodically depending on the attitude of the masses. As long as a majority stands together, then what we do as a species is right. To kill the sick and damaged is how animals cull the herd to make it stronger. We quit doing that in the past, but if the majority approve, then it becomes accepted practice. This practice is objected to by the creationists who value all human live as sacred and belonging to a god's will, and they are the loudest voices, but not necessarily the majority.

  3. No.

Humans have basic rights and ownership of themselves and their bodily person.

It would be an infringement upon these rights to enforce policy that an individual does not have the right to seek relief from incurable physical pain and disease even if the only way to relief is realized through death.

This is the issue, some do not believe that an individual owns their conscious identity or physical person.

They claim that a particular religion owns these things.

  4. You mis-apprehend one or both.

The two have nothing whatever to do with each-other.

  5. Indirectly, social darwinism contributes to both sides of the euthanasia argument.

Social darwinism contributes to the increased awareness and compassion for pain and death.  It also contributes to higher levels of sensitivity to both community and individual human rights.

Valid arguments, whether for or against euthansia, come from that increased awareness and sensitivity.  There's just a difference of opinion as to whether euthanasia is the solution to pain and suffering.

  6. To assume that all who object to euthanasia are creationists, is absurd.

Contemporary atheists want it both ways. We're evolved AND we're just another animal. Go figure.
