I'm going to start off fresh at a CC.I chose Sociology for my major.Reason being is that I have an immense interest in how people react to certain environments like poverty and urban areas.A close relative of mines insist that I should pick up another study, because Sociology doesn't insure a career. But that's the only study I have interest in.My question is:Is Sociology interesting? Can I get a good job with a Sociology degree? Can I eventually go into law school with a bachelors in Sociology?

  1. Sociology is a GREAT area of study.  Granted, many careers in sociology are going to requires a Master's....depending on what you are really interested in and what role money will play in your decision.

I was an education major and needed an elective.  I took Social Problems....and instantly knew I was home.  If you have a love for Sociology...stick with it regardless of what your family says.  And I have a feeling you will not be able to stop after your Bachelor's.  Undergrad work just provides a basis for Sociology...you will want to go beyond that.

And yes, you can get into law school with a degree in Sociology....you can also teach Sociology at the HS level, work in human resources and MANY other fields with just a Bachelor's.  I have had the opportunity to lecture as a TA while working on my Master's and it is my PASSION.  I love to learn knew things and Sociology is amazing.  Look into Sociology of Disaster...it crosses over into the areas you like (poverty, urban, etc...as well as ecological and more).

I am including a link to the ASA website where you can see a list of careers in Sociology once you have obtained your Bachelor's.  You can also check out the ASA website for jobs w/a Master's and beyond as well.  GOOD LUCK to you!

  2. Sociology is a great subject. I took it last year during my senior year of high school, and loved it. If you get your undergrad in Sociology, and then go to graduate school or law school, or pursue any other kind of higher education, numerous possibilities will present itself to you. Good luck!

  3. Absolutely. Understanding how people act in certain groups and environments is a very good area of study if you hope to get into law school. There is another important factor: to get into law school you have to have top grades in all your subjects. You'll have to ace your courses, or come very close to it.

Good luck. Sociology is one of my greatest interests too!

  4. Sociology is my life now, and while I fell into it by accident, I never regretted studying the subject. Never mind what your close relative says (I get that a lot too). Do what you want to do, because that is how you will do well.  And yes, you CAN go to law school with a bachelors in Sociology. In fact, after pursuing the subject, you might just be interested enough to attend grad school (like myself now). So take it, and enjoy the subject. All the best!
