When she married Prince Edward she was named Countess of Wessex as his wife.

  1. Legally she is "Her Royal Highness The Princess Edward" as commoners marrying into the Royal Family take their husband's name as their legal title.  However, she is STYLED "The Countess of Wessex" and this is the title which is used.

  2. Yes,she is a princess and a royal countess.Sophie could be known as Princess Edward,Countess of Wessex,Viscountess Severn;the formal styling of a commoner-bride is the female form of the husband's title and given name- quite old fashioned since women are known to have their own identities. These days, although that is the proper styling, women are known by the first names and royal stylings,a common practice of the media.

The practice is that the woman take the stylings of her husband;Edward was given the title Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn. Sophie took all of her husband's titles when she married him.

"On the day of the wedding, it was announced that The Queen had conferred the titles of The Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn upon Prince Edward. Upon her marriage, therefore, Miss Rhys-Jones became Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex.

It was also announced that any children the couple might have would not use the title HRH, but instead would carry a courtesy title as the sons or daughters of an Earl.

Their Royal Highnesses have a young daughter, Lady Louise, who was born on 8 November 2003 and a baby son, Viscount Severn, who was born on 17 December 2007."

  3. Yes, Sophie shares all of her husband's titles and styles. Her full title and style is "Her Royal Highness The Princess Edward, Countess of Wessex, Viscountess Severn".

She is a princess of the United Kingdom by virtue of marriage.

  4. Yes, but only by virtue of marriage. She is not a princess in her own right.
