No they are just shutting some down because not enough people are buying the coffee.

The Starbucks location in the former imperial palace in Beijing closed in July 2007. The coffee shop had been a source of ongoing controversy since its opening in 2000 with protesters objecting that the presence of the American chain in this location "was trampling on Chinese culture.

They new owner opened a ton of stores to get their product margin up but they over- saturated the market so much that now they are paring down. It's all corporate strategy but the people paying for it are the workers who are out of a job now.

For example in New York you could walk out of one Starbucks and see another one on the same block. That's ridiculous and that's why a lot are closing because they are too close to each other. But not all of them just 600.
