Is Stockwell (London) a nice place to live?

I'm thinking of moving to Stockwell with my family (daughter 4 years and my husband). What's it like to live around there? I've heard it's quite close to Brixton Market and fairly close to Covent Garden, is this true? Is it a safe area? Thankyou kind people. x

its next door to brixton and no-where near covent garden. it's not a particularly nice place to live

I used to be a junior school governor for a school in Stockwell and I think it's fair to describe the area as inner city. It is close to Brixton Market which is interesting but not exactly picturesque and nearer to New Covent Garden than Covent Garden i.e. both these markets are a big so what?

I think you need to ask the question fairly i.e. by comparing Stockwell with other areas that have equally good transport links and which you can afford... Having said that you'd be surprised by how much you can get for your money once you move away from the tube. The two Google Maps links below tell the whole story of inner as opposed to outer London...

P.S. To avoid just being negative about Stockwell try being proactive and looking around. I remember http://www.kfh.co.uk had excellent "Map View" and a list of 245 areas in London for you to look into - I'm so glad my wife got me out of Clapham North next to Stockwell using what she found on this site to convince me...

Stockwell is a rough area and you would not want to bring your daughter up there.

Remember the police shooting of the Brazilian, see below.

Brixton and the market is the next tube station away on the Victoria Line.

Covent Garden is not within walking distance but it it easy to get there on the tube.

i lived there about 10 years ago and it wasn't too bad but now its dangerous. You wouldn't want to go out at night because it dangerous. A Brazilian man was shot there 3 years ago in Stockwell station by a policeman i think he was a suspected terrorist of the 7/7 bombings on London transport. Its a dump don't go there especially if you have a young child she might get in the wrong crowd. most kids who live there are bad news.
