Question:

Is Sushi Despised for it's Taste or the Idea?

Sushi is my favorite food in the world. I go to a Japanese all-you-can eat that has over 80 different kinds of sushi. I crave it every time I get an appetite and I tend to make sushi at home. All I have to say is...

"d**n, everyone hates sushi... but have they even tried it?"

"It's undeniably better than other things that are considered disgusting!"

  1. We LOVE sushi - been eating it since we were kids ... born and raised in the islands.

The people I have come across who "hate" it, most haven't even tried it because they assume it is raw fish (not sure where this misnomer came from, but sushi does not mean raw fish).  Very few have tried it - maybe a handful - and they simply didn't care for it ... but at least they tried it first.

I love the maki rolls (the seaweed wrapped ones) and I also love the inari (cone or soy bean curd wrapped ones) as they are both yummy.  Maki rolls can have raw fish, but most have maybe tuna, or cucumber, or crab (usually imitation) or a combination, and they have egg and cooked fish as well.

Don't knock it till you've tried it ... and don't be a 2-year-old and say "I don't like it" when you've never tried it!  That just sounds SO childish coming from a supposed adult.  JMO

  2. some people are just ignorant about it because the are under the impression that it is all raw fish there are many different kinds some are just scared to step out of their element i personal love it

  3. I agree, that not liking something you haven't even tried, is just plain stupid!

It's ok to say "I won't eat ..", people have a right to decide what they'll put in their mouth.

I'm not particularly picky .. I won't eat garlic and kiwi, because I'm allergic.

I'm not very fond of sushi - or pizza. Not even when I make them myself - with full control of what's in it and on it.

I can eat them, but I don't think they taste great ...

I don't have a problem with raw fish - actually sashimi is my favourite sushi!!

But trust me: searing the tuna on a charcoal-grill - just for a second on each side - will improve it several thousand times!

Taste buds are curious little sensors :)

  4. i LOVE sushi. some people are just unwilling to push the boundries of their safe little worlds and try something new. its sad, really. they dont know what theyre missing out on :p

  5. I think its just the idea of eating uncooked food, But I personally love Sushi and most of my friends look at me in disgust.

  6. I love sushi too, but its got to be in japan!

Nothing comes close anywhere in Britain , where I live. I expect its better in America.

The only thing wrong about sushi, I often feel is some of the trendy types who hang about these places because its the fashion. Don't you agree?

  7. Everyone I know LOVES sushi.

Unfortunately, I can't stand it.  I have tried it.  The texture is nauseating, and I hate wasabi.  I am allergic to sesame and soy, and I do not like sticky rice.

I can't bear the smell of nori.

That pretty much takes care of it.

  8. For me it's a taste and texture thing.

I don't like the taste of nori, the rice is too sticky, and the texture of the raw fish just makes me nauseous.

  9. I love it. Most people don't like the idea of eating raw fish.

  10. To people who hate/dislike sushi and haven't even TRIED it, I revert to the old saying...

Don't knock it till ya try it!

SO true in the case of sushi. My entire family wet out for some last year and only my brother had had it before. My mother and I were really curious and my Dad was scared (he ended up not liking it much) Today my mom and I LOVE sushi and get some whenever we can . She was very open about all of it except for unagi (we love it and finally got her to eat some- she hates the stuff! weird!). And she's not too knee on allot of freash, raw fish. Not cuz it's raw, but cuz she doesn't like the flavor and texture. She still trys things though and often ends up loving raw salmon in certain rolls I get.

I really hate how allot of people hear 'sushi' and go crazy. The first thing they think of is that they'll get poisoned and DIE of raw fish! Sushi rolls aren't always raw! That's sashmi and allot of nigiri, people...sometimes sushi rolls, yes, but there's allot that don't have raw stuff! but when I ever start to explain it to them the different types, they just sit there and shake they're heads. Ugh...

  11. Sushi is really popular in Western countries these days, though it is true people turn their nose up at "raw fish".

It's the idea really, most of the people who reject sushi, have never tried it. Keep eating sushi, it gets fish into your diet in a good way. Societies that eat fish live longest. The Mediterranean countries and Japan live into their 80s, you get the Omega 3 fatty acids and other benefits to the nervous system that Westerners don't get because we don't eat enough fish. Also, nori, the seaweed wrap adds fibre and other vitamins.

I want to go to the Japanese restaurant that you're talking about now!!!

  12. Probably both. For most people, it's likely a repulsion for it's uncooked properties, and secondly for some of the ingredients like Unagi (eel) or tako (octopus).

Then you have people like me who just don't like fish to begin with, and/or because of the "fishy sea" like smell and flavor.

But I can't imagine it being a repulsion of how it looks though, even though I don't care much for sushi, I can't deny that it looks gorgeous when done well, and looks very yummy.
