Is Sydney, Australia a city on the same level as London or NYC?

Sydney is the largest city in Australia and also has a large population and covers a large area, the urban areas of Sydney and NYC are roughly the same size. From a non-biased point of view is Sydney comparable to cities such as London and NYC? Those 2 cities are both significant financial centres, huge shopping centres where just about anything one desires can be found, any type of food in any setting, etc. They're global cities.

Can Sydney compare to cities like those mentioned? Or in comparison is Sydney just a baby?

No offence intended to any Australians, I'm just wondering what you think?

  1. The whole of Australia is a baby compared to the USA or UK!

There are only 21million of us in the whole country. So compare that to USA or UK - or India or China for that matter.

So although Sydney itself might have the same urban area as NYC, there is not a lot, comparatively speaking, once you get beyond Sydney.

  2. Yeah, Sydney's not quite there.

    It's just not as big

  3. Been there and yes. And it is brighter and cleaner which makes a BIG difference to ones attitude and way of thinking.  Feels much more open and free and uncumbered.  Had pretty well everything I desired, and you wanted to come back.  People are freindly all around, strangers on the street or shopkeeps.

  4. I'm Australian and not offended at all, fact is Sydney has a population of 4.5 million and both NYC and London have populations exceeding about 10 million so relatively speaking Sydney is a baby!

  5. Much different and younger ,but isn't that what its all about being different.

  6. I have been to London and Paris and they are much bigger than sydney., but i think equally beautiful espically Paris. Just imagine Sydney in 50 or 100 years it will be so big!

i mean Paris is obviously the centre of art and fashion while london is history and finance they are two massive cites but im sure sydney is the biggest city or most beautiful in the southern hemisphere

  7. Sydney is a junior NYC as NYC is the senior. Sydney is always compared to NYC, especially in terms of the price and standards of living.

  8. Sydney is a regional financial powerhouse.  London and New York are global financial powerhouses.

London and New York can put any project together - Sydney can't (yet).

As far as shopping and food, I reckon Sydney has a greater variety of, and better, food than either of  London or New York.  Consumer goods, perhaps not off the shelf but anything can be obtained for a price.  Luxury goods are a global marketplace.

  9. In comparing London, NYC, and Sydney; I think that Sydney has still a ways to go until it joins London and NYC at their level.

    1. London

    2. NYC

    3. Sydney

  10. Sydney's just a baby compared to the other two. Mind you, it's a beautiful baby!
