Is Syzygium cumini (Java Plum) also considered under the family of Rubiaceae?

  1. No. It is from Family Myrtaceae .

    Myrtaceae flowers have polypetalous corolla ; where as Rubiaceae flowers have Gamopetalous corolla .

    Myrtaceae flowers  has superior ovary ; where as the plants from Rubiaceae have inferior Ovary.

    EDIT- Myrtguy is absolutely correct when he says that Myrtaceae never has superior ovary.

    It was an inadvertent mistake on my part and I now stand corrected . Thanks are dut to Him !!


  2. Harshal is right (except that Myrtaceae almost never have superior ovaries). Rubiaceae also often have conspicuous stipules.

    Perhaps you are asking because the fruit of Syzygium cumini can look rather like coffee berries (genus Coffea, Rubiaceae)?
