Is Terminator Salvation a sequel or a prequel?

I'm confused, is Salvation a sequel to Terminator 3 or a prequel to the first Terminator? Does it follow the same continuity or is it a alternative storyline?

It's a sequel, following up to Terminator 3.It tells what happened in the war against Skynet.

It's a sequel following the events of the first three films (post nuclear war).  From what I've heard they're planning on doing another trilogy for the Man v.s. Machines half (sort of like what they did with Star Wars, the first three films follow a different plot than the last three films).

I actually think it will be pretty good, Jonathan Nolan (Batman Begins, Dark Knight) did part of the screenplay, and Christian Bale is John Connor.
