  2. Nope, it is British through and through.  The founder was British but he was of Polish-Jewish parents.

    It was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen when he began to sell surplus groceries from a stall in the East End of London. His first day’s profit was £1 and sales £4.

    EDIT - I have just done some more research having reviewed my original answer.  Jack was a British businessman (born Jacob Edward Kohen) was born in Whitechapel in the East End of London,  As his birth name suggests, he was the son of an Avram Kohen, an immigrant Polish-Jewish tailor, and his first wife, Sime Zamremba.
