  1. Goodson Name Meaning and History

English (chiefly East Anglia and East Midlands): nickname for a dutiful son, from Middle English gode ‘good’ + sone ‘son’.

English: from a Middle English survival of the Old English personal name Godsunu, composed of the elements god ‘good’ + sunu ‘son’.

Possibly an Americanized form of German Gutersohn, a nickname or pet name meaning ‘good son’ for one of out of many sons.

  2. While it is not an Irish name that doesn't mean someone you know who states they are Irish aren't mostly Irish.  Names can be deceptive.  A paternal great great grandfather could have been English and married an Irish woman and all marriages since then could have been Irish.

Father Benedict Grocschel states he is Irish but he had an Alsatian grandfather and that is where he got his name.
