It says in the beginning that the murders were true, but of course it was exaggerated and tried to set-up what they think happened because no one knew who the killers were or why they killed them.

Inspired and based are 2 completely different things. Inspired means he got the idea for the film from a true event. The idea, NOT the story! Geez.

It is BASED on a true story. That doesn't mean that the movie resembles truth in any way though.

It's based on a true story, but that doesn't necessarily mean everything in the movie is true. I think they just got the idea from the Manson murder or something like that and created a movie inspired by that.

It's "inspired" by true events. I read on Wikipedia or on imdb that he got the idea when a stranger rang his doorbell and then later into the night there were several killings in the neighborhood. I love that movie.
