  1. I use deet fly gel by NAF (my horse is scared of sprays)

so far it's working better than the wipes i used to use.

  2. That's a hard one to answer. It really depends on the idividual situation. Most will work if there aren't alot of flies. I use bronco and it seems like it's a big enough name brand that it could be in the uk. The problem most people have is that they don't put enough on. We have lots of flys in the south west us. I spray my horses liberally every 3 days or so. This seems to keep the flys down. If you have a horrible problem then you could spend a little money and really take care of the problem. Horse spray doesn't help that much. Two things that might cost a little but I think would work well are an ingestible powder that makes the p**p poison when they flies lay their eggs in it they die and you can order a kind of wasp that kill flies and lay their eggs in them and turn them loose. It's some kind of natural fly repellent. If you want to be really cheap you can put some sweet vinegar like apple vinegar, pretty much anything but straight white, in a bucket or jar about a quarter full. You can then put some dish washing liquid in it to break the surface tension and put some plastic over it, tie it around the edge of the container and punch some fly sized holes in it. The will go through the holes after the vinegar and will drow or die from not being able to get out. This won't be alot more effective than just using a good deal of spray.

I LOVE this product.  When I was given a gelding, he came with his tack trunk (lucky me) and a bottle of this was included.  I only have to spray it every other day, and it is hot here in Georgia in August.  I'm sure you can find a UK retailer that carries it.

    Best of luck!

  4. I know you can make your own, the woman in the stable next door to me gave me some hoem made fly spray, dunno how she made it, but it worked. Some people say fly spray doesnt work but if you cover both your horses eyes properly then spray it on the horses face it normaly works better, it also repells flys better if you have some humon fly spray on yourself, so thy will also stay away from you, which keeps them away frm the area of the horse where you are. Im 13 so sorry i dont know how to make the fly spray, i want to know myself so ill post a question , why not use shampoo that has fly repellent in it? ive seen loads and it just helps repelling flys, so you can enjoy you ride better =]

  5. I agree, Endure is a good one.  Made by Franam.  Pyrana is also a good one.  So is happy Horse Fly Spray, all ship all over the world.  www.happyhorseflyspray.com.    I tried Bronco, once.  Waste of money.  Same goes for natural or home remedies.  Dosnt work.

  6. I assume the UK has a lot of the same sprays as the US. I personally like Pyrahna Wipe N' Spray - it works really well, but doesn't last more than a day or so. A longer lasting one that works almost as well is Endure by Farnam. Also, there's one called Mosquito Halt that seems to do a good job. The key is to alternate fly sprays so the bugs don't develop an immunity to whatever you're using.

  7. Global Herbs do a fantastic in feed supplement called FlyFree . . . all natural herbs and my boy has been on it for 4 days now and he is the only horse in the field not swishing his tail!!!

Its inexpensive, the only problem is it really does stink! It comes out through the coat and repels the flies! but on the up side it also gives the horse a great shine!

Try it.... I promise you will never go back to fly sprays!!!

    Hope this helps :-)

  8. Any can of fly spray works if you use the actual can to hit the flies with! Or if you don't fancy that, we've got Rentokil Fly, Ant and Wasp Killer that seems to work just fine!

  9. hi, i think fly sprays are rubbish so when I went to the lincolnshire show I had a good look around and three stands recomended

Net-Tex Fly Repellent ADVANCED 72 Hour Spray 500ml.  It is the best spray ive ever tried and ive had horses for ten years.

    Hope this helps  xx

  10. I use the one shot bombs from my work, they would kill a horse if it was left in the room while it was spraying! lol

  11. We have a wall mounted fly spray system (Country Vet brand) that works great! It's a little tan colored shell with an on off switch and sprays / hour switch. You have to buy the aerosol can separately. The whole set up is about $50 including the first can. They last just over a month and are about 20-30 to replace (about as much as a good bottle of fly spray). We only have a couple flies in the barn now and they don't hang out for long. I live in TX so it's been in the triple digits, and the flies usually come in the barn to sit on the shavings or in the sun in the morning. Not anymore!

  12. a little off your question...but I have heard really good reports from horse owners about the fly predators...keeps the flys almost completly out of your barn. I would imagine they sell them in UK.

  13. Best thing i've ever bought is Deosect - it's expensive but you dilute it with water so it lasts ages! I bought it originally for a severe lice infestation but i use it every couple of weeks now (you don't need to use it every day). Also, Coopers fly repellent is good but i personally don't think its as good as Deosect x

  14. I've used them all.  The best are not water soluble, and are oil based.  I use Farnam's Endure and it is the best I've ever seen.  It lasts for a few days, still working, and it won't sweat off like water-based sprays.  It is more expensive, but because it works and lasts, it is a better buy.

  15. The best fly spray I've ever used is Barrier Enhanced Formula Fly Repellant, it's readily available in the UK (in every saddlery I've ever been in). It even repels horseflys which are really persistent, and it's the only thing which helped my horse who used to come up in hundreds of huge lumps from horsefly/midge bites.

It smells quite strong, so not all horses like it - but this just meant that I had to apply to the face by hand so it didn't get up their noses (which I usually do anyway), and my friends actually love the smell of it!

This stuff really works, and it lasts for 8 hours, where most of them seem to disappear straight away!
