We recently bought a 1080p Plasma tv. I want to get my husband a new DVD player for his birthday, but am totally confused on what to buy. Is there something out there that will play CD's too? And what about the whole DVD/HD DVD/ Blu-Ray thing??? I have no idea what to look for. Help! Thank you! P.s. We did give him a PS3 for Xmas & I understand that will work as a Blu-Ray player too?

  1. Hold on... he already has a PS3 and you want to get him another DVD player?  He may not need another one.  The PS3 plays Blu-Ray, regular DVD's, and music CD's.

But regardless, you should get him any Blu-Ray player.  Forget about HD-DVD, the format lost the High Definition war, and it's quickly becoming obsolete.  In a year or so, there won't be any HD-DVD movies left to buy.  Think of HD-DVD as the old Betamax tapes from the 70's/80's (think of Blu-Ray as the reigning equivalent of VHS).  Blu-Ray is the new standard in movie formats.

However, be careful when you purchase a Blu-Ray player.  Some of the new movies coming out (Disney's Sleeping Beauty for example) have features that only the newest Blu-Ray players can run.  Personally, I would wait another year or so before buying a Blu-Ray player.  The technology is so new and expensive that it's constantly being tweaked and upgraded.

I would personally wait until Blu-Ray matures a bit, prices come down, and the technology reaches a plateau that I'm comfortable with.

But whatever you decide, best wishes to your husband on his birthday!

  2. hd-dvd is pretty dead, but there are some players from LG that plays all formats you asked about. I do have both HD-DVD and Blu ray. The HD-DVD is through my XBOX-360 and have a stand alone Blu-ray player.

I would not be surprised if the prices of the blu-ray players go up since they are the only game in town now can we say monopoly

  3. HD-DVD & BluRay fought out the battle for the High Definition Version of DVD reiniscent of the VHS vs BetaMax battle of the 80's. In many ways HD-DVD was better quality but BluRay won, Sony backed it, put it in their games console and the film studios they owned opted for it as the preferred HighDefinition format. Any BluRay player (including the PS3) should play old DVDs and CD's

  4. if it plays blue-ray it will play the rest..

  5. PS3 will play DVD's CD's & Blu-Rays there is no need to buy another player.
