Question:

Is There A Test To Determine What My Mutt Is?

I have a 2 year old German Shepherd mix that I adopted from the animal shelter, I wasnt told what he was mixed with though. He looks ALOT like a German Shepherd, but with short hair and a shorter mouth. Judging from his heads shape, I want to say he is mixed with a American Bulldog (not to be confused with the English Bulldog who are short and have huge flappy faces), but I was wondering if there was a test that a vet can do to figure out what breed my dog is? Someone told me there was a saliva test, but I cant find anything about that. I highly doubt he is mixed with more then 1 other breed of dog, just because his German Shepherd features are so strong. Like everyone who see's him thinks he's a German Shepherd pup (he is 23 inches tall measuring from the shoulders down)

  1. Nope - ok, so that was a short answer.  I asked my vet the same thing for my mixed breeds.  He said even if they look like one breed they could have 100 different breeds behind them.  There is really no way to tell unless you have the blood line all the way back like show dogs do.

  2. You should ask your vet. Most vets are pretty knowledgable about the breeds and can help you determine if your dog is mixed. The vet would also be the one ot tell you about any DNA tests for dogs.

    Hope this helps. :~)

  3. There is a blood test available. Check with a veterinarian for more information.

There's one available for people too!

  4. There are dog breed tests out there, however, they are not anywhere near 100% and they do not cover all the breeds out there.  I would encourage you to wait a few years until the test is more mature.

  5. there are doggie DNA tests it is about $70 bucks depending on where you live. You send in a blood sample and a picture i think. I know someone who did it and they found out their dog was part shepherd chow and poodle!

  6. There is one, I just learned about it

Your vet might have it or you can order the blood-draw kit to provide to your vet.

  7. This test is available through Petco. Click on the link at the bottom of the page where it says "purchased online" for the price and to buy it if you choose.

  8. We have a GS that is mixed with a Chow.  The only way knowing this is the black/blue on his tongue.  He looks like a GS and in the size of a female, small.  He is short haired and black & tan but has more of the GS traits.  He looks very intimidating to others.

You can have genetic testing done to find out the breed through your Vet.  The cost, I don't know.  I saw this on Today (weekend) show and I can't tell you how many months but I know it was in this past year.

  9. Yes there is. You can order it online and do it yourself.
