  1. BY right and virtue THE citys name is ..THESSALONIKI...meaning .VICTORY IN THESSALY..... the word SALONIKA is  dare i say i hilly billy version of the region... .you will hear people say  much more in the older days than today..(sta salona) =at the salona...describing the region..and it stuck as such..either word it is the same CITY..

  2. Yes, it is.

    Greek - Thessaloniki

    English - Salonica

To Greek Warrior: That happens with other countries' cities and their names too, not just Greek. The original names often get anglicised. For example, Beograd - Belgrade, Praha - Prague, Roma - Rome etc.

EDIT: I guess some people give thumbs down no matter what you say... LOL :)

  3. Yes it's the same!

    Solun - macedonian version

    Salonika - english version

p.s. I'm Macedonian you have "secret admirer" who needs history and etymology lessons:)

No, I am referring to user LOUCAS A:)!

  4. Thessaloniki = Salonika = Solun (Солун)

    Same thing

p.s. MaCeDonIan PhaLanX what do you meen? Is it related to the thumbs down or?

  5. Yes. And if you are looking to fly there the international code is SKG (Salonika, Greece)

  6. Yes, Salonika is just an abbreviation

  7. "All variations for the city's name derive from the original (and current) appellation 'Thessaloniki'. The alternative name Salonica, formerly the common name used in some western European languages, is derived from a variant form Σαλονίκη (Saloníki) in popular Greek speech. The city's name is also rendered Thessaloníki or Saloníki with a dark l typical of Macedonian Greek.[3][4] Names in other languages prominent in the city's history include سلانيك in Ottoman Turkish and Selânik in modern Turkish, Solun (Cyrillic: Солунь) in the Slavic languages of the region, Sãrunã in Aromanian, and Selanik in Ladino. It is also known as 'Thess' by Anglophonic diaspora Greeks who returned to Greece and by the international forces stationed in the various ex-Yugoslav territories and who visit the city for their short breaks."

  8. Yes its the same.

  9. Yes they are the same.   "THESSALONIKI" is the Greek name,

  10. Yes, Salonika derives from the old abbreviation from Turkish Salonic (in slavic I think is the same) and after so many years it stuck!

  11. Yes it's the same city, but you may have noticed that many major cities and island in Greece and Cyprus have anglicised versions. For example:

    Athens instead of Athina

    Salonica instead of Thessaloniki

    Nicosia instead of Lefkosia

    Corfu instead of Kerkyra

    Crete instead of Kriti

To be honest I don't know the reason for this. I think I'm gonna pose this as a question in YahooAnswers!
