Is This Antibiotic O.K. For A Guinea Pig To Take?

I know that guinea pigs cannot take some antibiotics. Our vet just put mine on Baytril. Is this alright for me to give to him. I ask this because guinea pigs are considered 'exotics' & the local vet here has little experience with them. Please help!

  1. yes Baytril is fine, of course depending on what is wrong with him. I am sure your vet knows what he is doing =)

  2. Baytril is safe for the guinea pig to take.  You can also find great help to pass on to your vet from the group/list Guinea Pig Daily Digest at:

    http://www.gpdd.org

You can also look online for any books written by the late Peter Gurney if you're in need of a good guinea pig book.

  3. Guinea pigs are sometimes intolerant to an antibiotic, it's not usually specific to all GPs are intolerant to a certain type.  Keep an eye on your GP, he should be getting better after 2-3 days.  If you notice "a loss of appetite, diarrhea or lethargy develops while on the antibiotic, it may be an indication that the pig is intolerant to it, or the infection is resistant to it, requiring a change in medication." http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotic_in...

Baytril is a pretty common pet antibiotic used to fight infections.  It should end up being okay.  The key thing is to have the right dosage for a GP.

    Hope that helps!

  4. Yeah it's fine, don't worry.

I hope your piggie gets better soon!
