A gelding at my stables has yellow hard crust all around his p***s(when he's relaxing) I have never seen this before and was wondering if this is normal. Is it because his sheath needs cleaning?

I don't own this horse so don't go saying "call a vet" because It's not my place and I'm sure the stable owners will be pretty pi**ed if I went and called a vet out and they pay the bill lol. I'd probably get kicked out for that!

  1. It is normal.  When it becomes excessive, the sheath area should be checked to be sure no accumulation has formed "beans" of smegma mixed with dirt that can irritate.  You could mention sheath cleaning to the stable manager to see if they routinely perform it.

  2. in just needs to be cleaned

  3. Just needs cleaning with warm, salted water.  But not having everything pulled off in one go, that would make him sore.

  4. Yes, that means his sheath needs to be cleaned. You don't necessarily have to get a vet to do it, but many people do. You can let the owners know that you noticed it.

  5. Yes.. the yellow crust indicates that the sheath needs cleaning... it's a buildup called smegma, that can make the horse uncomfortable, and in serious cases can lead to infection... You perhaps could discreetly ask the owner if they noticed that his sheath might need cleaning, and see if they are willing to get it done... or to show you how if you are interested in future horse ownership..

Hope that helps you out. :)

  6. Just cleaned my horses p***s used to be like that but it's nothing to worry about.

  7. He just needs it cleaned. All horses (whether mare, gelding or stallion) needs all of their privates cleaned including the "back door".

I'm sure they would appreciate it too.

I am sure none of us go around without cleaning our privates often, right?

  8. This is called "smegma"..a normal occurrence, one that you will find on both stallions and geldings..mares also have their own "version".

Their gelding needs his sheath cleaned.

  9. Yes it needs to be cleaned.

So many have animals and don't properly care for them.

It's not going to hurt him but shows the type owner you have in your barn.

  11. yer its usually pretty normal most geldings/stallions get that it wouldnt hurt if you or someone could try giving it a wash if you dont it shouldnt matter much but in some cases it gets to dirty that it could cause irratation or infection but not usually it has to get alot of it but if you could clean it it would do it good your choice  leah

  12. Lovely image ( lol - my daughter said it looked like it had been dipped in cornflakes )

Yes, it needs to be cleaned. Ask the stable owners before you do anything about it though as some horses just won't allow themselves to be touched there and you don't want to get hurt.
