Low end graphics cards are just high end cards down-clocked???

i came across this about overclocking graphics cards

"Depending on the card and cooler, it might be able to clock 400MHz or 100MHz, it is very, very card-specific. In general, lower-end cards clock better than higher-end ones, since they're usually just (basically) downclocked versions of the more powerful cards based on the same core. For instance, the GeForce 6600 will usually clock to around 560MHz, while the 6600GT, which has a stock clock of 500MHz (as opposed to 300MHz on the 6600) usually also limits at about 560MHz. The 7600GS has a stock core frequency of 450MHz and will go up to 600-610MHz, while the 7600GT with 575MHz stock will go to 620-630MHz."

is this true???

if so why pay more for high end when you can get low end, and over clock it using riva tuner

  1. Can’t speak for graphics cards, but for CPU’s it goes something like this. (I’d assume a similar reason for graphics cards).

Intel makes 2 million 3gig CPU’s. They sell 2.5 million and the market bottoms out. They have .5 million chips they can’t sell. They down clock them and sell at a bargain price with cheap heat sinks and fans.

Another reason is they have their output set up to make 2 million 3gig CPU’s. They have a 1 million 2gig CPU’s order. It’s cheaper to continue the run and make 3 million 3gig CPU’s and down clock 1 million of them than to stop the run and tool up for 1 million slower chips.

  2. i totally concur my friend, spot on

  3. Not totally true. High end cards tend to have better heat dissipation components so simply overclocking low end ones can shorten their lifespan.

  4. i think that it is true

  5. yes they can be, some high end cards use the same chips as the lower profile versions, but not all GPU's are the same, some can keep overclocking before they break whilst others don't do so well, all the gpu's are tested, and the ones that can handle the pressure go into more powerful cards whilst the strugglers are placed into low profile cards
