No TiVo doesn't convert anything. TiVo records the program it is fed by your TV source onto a hard drive just like the hard drive in your computer.

It will then play the program back with options like fast forward, rewind, pause etc.

No it is not a tivo will not do any converting for you but if you have cable or satellite you have nothing to worry about.
