Question:

Is Tidy Cats litter clumping or plain clay?

Tidy Cats in the yellow bag for multiple cats, is this clumping or plain? I don't want a clumping litter because my kitten gets it on her feet and eats it trying to get it off. I was told it can build up inside them and be fatal.

Can anyone recommend good non-clumping clay litters or alternatives?

  1. I buy the bags and it's their non-clumping kind.  I like it pretty well for what it is.  I also use Feline Pine and the generic version (from petsmart).  I prefer that one but my cats seem to prefer peeing in the pine and pooping in the clay so I keep buying both.

The pine kind is safe, is great at reducing the odor of the pee, and it's safe to flush their p**p.  It just needs a mat in front so they don't track it everywhere.

  2. I have been using the clumping litter and have one cat 13 yo, and never had a problem with it.  However, Tidy Cat makes both kinds.

  3. That is the first time I have heard that. Cats have such strong stomach acid that it can break down bones and I assume it would do the same to litter, but I am with you that I wouldn't want that for my kitty. This is the plain and non clumping. Have you tried the crystals? I hear it is good.

  4. Yes, babies will often eat the litter, and it *can* cause blockages of their intestines.  You're wise to want to use something else.  You might want to try either World's Best (need to go to the pet store for it, unfortunately) or Sweet Scoop (in grocery stores).  Both of them are safe if the kitten eats a bit of it, as they are corn/wheat based.  And they also are scoopable, so they aren't "nasty" like regular clay litters.

  5. Tidy Cat makes both kinds of litter, clumping and regular.  I use plain unscented clay, and just dump the whole box once  a week cause I hate daily scooping. I have to go to a pet supply store to get it, but it's cheap and it smells less than scooping litter I think.  Theres also Yesterday's News, which is newspaper pellets, and Feline Pine that's sawdust pellets.

<edit> The crystals aren't good, I've heard of cats eating those and getting sick too.  A lot of longhaired cats have problems with clumping litter sticking to their toes.  Never heard of it being fatal, but it can make them ill.
