Is Tiger Woods an american hero?

I know he doesn't save lives or fight for our country but indirectly he may save lives when he inspires minority children to possibly play golf rather than join a gang.

Any sites to Tigers greatness or other info and thoughts would be appreciated.

He has done a lot of good for poor kids, but calling him an American hero is stretching it a lot.

Absolutely. But to say he's bigger than all those is perpostrous. He is great, at golf. In fact, the greatest at golf. But it's not fair to compare him to the other sports. They have different levels of competition, different mentalities, and different ways to win. There is only one way to win at golf. Lower scores than the rest. No team, No gimmes. Just your final score.

I would not put anyone of those guys ahead of tiger either. They were great at their job when they did it, in fact the greatest. I would say the actual accomplishment is equal, and we will see what his legacy tells us to compare him to the rest.

One must decide what his definition is for "hero". According to the dictionary definition, one could make a great argument for both sides. It is up to you and others individually to make that determination. I am a golf nut, I admire and respect him, but he is no "hero" to me. But for many, many others, I know that he is and regardless of what others say here, do not be ashamed to call him your "hero".

How can you possibly say that Nicklaus "isn't close" to Tiger's accomplishments?  Are you insane?  Did Tiger Woods invent golf when I wasn't looking?  Cure cancer?  Develop a car that runs on water?  Grow a beard in five seconds?

There is no doubt, NONE, that Tiger is the greatest golfer on the planet, and probably will be remembered as the greatest of all time, but right now that's about it.  Yeah, he donates millions of his close to ONE BILLION dollars to charity and foundations, but he sure as h**l doesn't run them himself.

Tiger does alot for children with his charity and he sure will be one of the greatest athletes to play the game. He will be legend for many years to come.

The greatest golfer of all time? Not yet. Probably will be though. But a hero?? Not in my book. My 3 sons would be heroes in my book. All 3 in the Army, all 3 have been to Iraq, and all 3 will be going back. THey are heroes. he is a golfer.

I don't think any athlete is a hero. Yes, kids want to be like them, but for the wrong reasons. Kids see the big house, cars, the money these guys make. They don't look or see the hard work it takes to make it to the level these guys acheive. IF, and I do mean IF Tiger is a hero it would be for the school he has started and the life he lives off the golf course.

If the definition of hero was someone who sets a good example, then Tiger belongs on the list. And if a hero was someone judged by their accomplishments in his or her field of expertise, then Tiger belongs at the top of the list. I personally don't think we should judge a hero this way. No he's not a hero, just a very special, special person.

The term hero gets assigned too easily because we're not happy with the ones we've labeled in recent years. I don't think the choice of "play golf or join a gang" arises as frequently as you might think. Why don't we just say that Tiger is your hero and leave it at that and see if someone else comes along that maybe we all can agree on.
