Is http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691’s captaincy responsible for Sri Lanka’s downslide?
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033 (UAE).
The Lankans gathered this embarrassment after their humiliating 1-0 defeat in the Test series against the host, Men in Green.
Reaching the finale of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup 2011 was certainly a huge achievement for the Sri Lanka; however, the Tigers seem to have lost their sharp teeth after their mega event glory.
After losing World Cup final to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 at home.
An ordinary captaincy by Tillakaratne Dilshan is being considered as one of the biggest reasons behind Sri Lanka’s nonstop tragedy.
The aggressive opening batsman took over the charge when the ex-skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KC-Sangakkara-c1779, decided to relinquish leadership duties after the World Cup.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was expected to hand over the reins to someone young who could rebuild the crew for the next showpiece event, but the governing body appointed Dilshan as the captain of the ship – the 35-year-old cricketer whose participation in the
2015 World Cup is a big question mark.
Without a shadow of doubt, the Kalutara-born cricketer is a wonderful batsman and has guided his country to number of wins over the years.
He is pretty good in reading the situation from the cricketing point of view, but when it comes to motivate his teammates, Dilshan looked very ordinary during the last six months.
His batting form has also been suffering due to the captaincy job. In the recently-concluded Test series against the Cornered Tigers, he collected just 134 runs in six outings. He was totally out-of-touch in the One Day Internationals (ODIs) as well, collecting
just 119 runs at an average of 23.80 Test series.
He is a wonderful striker of the ball and an attacking batsman who has the ability to change the course of the play within a few moments. His batting averages of 41.81 and 34.75 in Tests and ODIs respectively tells that story that the right-hander has some
spark in him.
Yet, his captaincy records are not impressive by any means. Out of 21 one-dayers so far, he led the side to just nine trumps, while the islanders are yet to register their second Test win under his command.
Another disappointing factor for the Lankan cricket fans is that despite the absence of two former captains, Sangakkara and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397, Dilshan is so far unsuccessful in learning the tricks of the trade.
Within the cricking circles in Sri Lanka, some experts have already been cricket board to reappoint Sangakkara as skipper for the longest version of the sport and pick somebody young as ODI leader.
Dilshan’s next challenge will be to salvage some respect and pride when his men tour http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 for three Tests and five ODIs next month.
In cricket, the importance of a captain cannot be denied and therefore, Dilshan is somehow responsible for Sri Lanka’s recent downslide.
However, he cannot be blamed for the whole thing, as cricket is team game and every member of the troop must be held responsible for either of side’s success and loss.
