Question:

Is Tours, France, multicultural?

I know it sounds racist, but I don't mean it to be. I am just interested in finding out if Tours/Orleans, that area of France, has a lot of migrants, or is predominantly white. I'm of Asian background, living in Australia, and would like to go on exchange to a part of France which is multicultural, where I wouldn't stick out too much (apart from the fact my french will be nowhere near as good...)

  1. hi. I am french, lived for 3 years in orleans et got 3 monthes in Tours during my student time.

Avoid orleans !!!! there is nothing to do. Tours is a very beautiful city called "le petit paris". neither one or the other are racist. I mean there are racist people everywhere in the world but not particularly most in Orleans or Tours. no worries for that

  2. I've visited Tours twice and I recall that it is quite multi-cultural. In fact, many of France's major cities are multi-cultural. There are definitely many Africans and Asians living in Tours and I remember eating a fantastic Chinese restaurant opposite the Town Hall one night. Not sure if it's still there but if it is, you should visit should you go. I've never had better Chinese food!

By the way, you may want to consider other cities such as Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nantes etc. I spent a year in Bordeaux and it has a massive influence from other cultures. Not only does it attract students from around the world, there are also significant African, Spanish, Indian and other Asian communities living there. I loved it!

  3. If what you mean is "are there Asians" then yes although the largest Asian population in France is in Paris where there are two fairly large Asian dominated areas. One is around the Place D'Italie in the southeast corner  and the other is in Belleville in the north.

By the way, the "multicultural" bit isn't much appreciated in France. If you speak French, act French, and understand French culture and institutions then you are French no matter what your skin color.
