Am looking at this as a possibility for nursing employment.

  1. I have visited there when I lived in Australia (I am also from the UK) and my thoughts are that there are far nicer places to live in Australia.  Personally I thought it was a dump and the main tourism is just for people who need to stop off on the way to somewhere nicer.  If you want to go and live in Australia then Sydney or Brisbane have great hospitals and are way nicer places to live.

  2. Townsville is very hot and dry.  Nowhere near the Great Barrier Reef.  It always seems to miss out on the rain.  Many Government offices, Army Base and Air force base are there. There are lots of Public Servants.  The hospital is big, and fairly good. People are friendly, and there is lots to do in your spare time.  The beaches are pristine, but there is no surf. DEADLY Box Jellyfish and other marine stingers are prevalent during the summer months, so unless you swim in the netted enclosures, you are likely to get deaded.  Magnetic Island is just 8 kms away, with regular ferry services.

Population of around 130,000, but probably double that if you take in all the surrounds.  Accommodation is readily available and affordable. The only thing I have against Townsville is that it is so hot and dry.

  3. The average rainfall ranges from 2571 millimetres at Paluma (north west of the city) to 1136 millimetres at Townsville City to 853 millimetres at Woodstock (inland south of the city). Like most of North and Far North Queensland, Townsville is prone to Tropical Cyclones. They usually occur between November and May (the so-called Cyclone Season), forming mainly out in the Coral Sea, and usually tracking west to the coast. Notable cyclones to affect the Townsville Region have been: Cyclone Tessi (2000), Cyclone Joy (1990), Cyclone Althea (1971), Cyclone Leonta (1903) and Cyclone Sigma (1896).

Townsville has an average daily temperature between 19.7 °C to 28.8 °C. December is the warmest month of the year with daily temperatures ranging from 24.0 °C to 31.4 °C, although it can occasionally hit the 40 C mark. July is the coolest month with daily temperatures ranging from 13.5 °C to 25.0 °C. Townsville experiences an annual average of 8.4 hours of sunshine per day.

Crocodiles [protected species] live in the area once you venture into the bush, and the coral sea /great barrier reef is wonderful for diving.  Sharks are there  but rarely cause problems.  Other than that, I like the place.  I live a few hundred kilometers south of there.

  4. Not for a Laplander, just a little too warm for you, otherwise very nice place
