technically speaking, genocide is the "sistematic and orderly killing of millions of citizens based on their race, nationality or creed"... As far as I know, it was neither systematic nor based on any of the three. It was a War raging all through Europe and the north of the middle east, not to mention it was smack in the middle of the downfall of the Ottoman Empire. Turks today are a different nation. I say it was NOT genocide, just consecuences of war. what do you think?? Should the "Genocide" bill pass???

  1. No one said that the turkish of today are guilty of what there ancestors did but the point is not to deny that it existed.no race can say he or she can never become cruel or unhearted for one reason or the other during a period of there history.recognizing slavery and that it was wrong doesn't mean that all the countries who did it are to be condemmed today.but one must learn from the errors of the past so as not to commit them today, and to not recognize them is a sure way to commit them in the future.

  2. Does it matter?  Nobody alive can say if they were or were not.   I don't think we should hold descendants responsible for the actions of previous generations.  That goes for Germany too.

We can learn from it, but there is no point in condemnation.

It's a little egotistical for America to even bring it up.  I am suspicious of the timing for such a debate.  I think it has to do with the war in Iraq, and a back-door way for the Dems to shut it down.  They just don't consider the consequences of such rhetorical insults.

  3. it was genocide, but Turkey is not the Ottoman empire. Study Amin Al Husseini and you may see a connection to what we face today. I don't believe it is up to the US even though the US sponsored a UN proposal to make it unacceptable to deny the holocaust Germany committed. Yet the US denies the fact that they themselves commited genocide

  4. On April 24, 1915, Armenian intellectuals were arrested by Ottoman authorities, and with the Tehcir Law, eventually a large proportion of Armenians living in Anatolia perished in what has become known as the Armenian Genocide. There was local Armenian resistance in the region, developed against the activities of the Ottoman Empire. The events of 1915 to 1917 are regarded by Armenians and the vast majority of Western historians to have been state-sponsored mass killings, or genocide. Turkish authorities maintain that the deaths were the result of a civil war coupled with disease and famine, with casualties incurred by both sides. Most estimates for the number of Armenians killed range from 650,000 to 1.5 million.

  5. It was a sistematic and orderly killing of millions of citizens based on their race, nationality or creed.

In 1915 Armenians lived in all the major cities of the Ottoman Empire. By 1923 the Armenian population of Turkey had been reduced to those living in Constantinople.

While there was an official 'special organization' founded in December 1911 by the Ottoman government, a second organization that participated in what led to the destruction of the Ottoman Armenian community was founded by the lttihad ve Terraki. This organization adopted its name in 1913 and functioned like a special forces outfit.

  6. NO

  7. not the Turkey of today...the Ottoman Turks, which were muslim BTW,were guilty of attempted genocide...

  8. as far as you know? ..................................

Occupation: Turkey invaded Cyprus 1974 and it's still occupying 36% of the island keeping 35,000* soldiers on (now) EU territory. Turkey, despite being officially an EU candidate country, doesn't recognize the legal government of Cyprus.# The UN has found Turkey guilty and has issued a series of resolutions which Turkey continues to violate till today.# The European Court of Human Rights also found Turkey guilty for violations of Human Rights in Northern Cyprus. (*Source: European Policy Center)

Genocide/Ethnic Cleansing: Turkey still denies today that the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and the Pontian Genocide (one year later) took place. Anyone who admits that the genocides did take place can be prosecuted for treachery under Turkish law. (See "Links" section for more information)

Freedom of Speech: Turkey's most important intellectuals have been accused for treachery because they dared to speak against the State.

The Kurdish Question: Although progress has been made on human rights issues, Turkey has never stopped torturing the kurdish minority which amounts to more than 20% of the country’s total population. (Human Rights Watch)

Furthermore, we believe that the Turkish membership will be negative for European Union:

Integration at Risk: Further EU integration will be practically impossible. (This could could explain why some EU governments, traditionally hostile to European integration, and the US government, are big sponsors of Turkish EU membership.):

The little European feeling that exists today in Europe will fade away, since the majority of Europeans cannot find a link with Turkey.

More and more people will turn against the EU institutions as they will feel less and less represented.
