Is Turkey in Europe or Asia?

I know it is a transcontinental country and part of Eurasia, and that most of it is in Asia and some in Europe, but I want to know what continent it is really classed as, not both, just one.

If it has to be classed as belonging to one continent, it must be 'Asia'.

'Suez canal' is regarded as the boundary between Asia and Africa and Sinai peninsula of Egypt (held till recently by 'Israel', an Asian country) is part of Asia making 'Egypt' as transcontinental like 'Turkey'. These are trivialities.

Historically Turkey has been classed as part of Asia (Asia Minor according to the earliest maps) since the dawn of  map making.  

Keep  in mind though that countries cannot be easily labelled and put in a box.  Economically Turkey has more in common with Europe.  Politically it is trying to become a part of the European Union.  Geographically it is on both continents with the major part in Asia (which is where it would be classed).   In the religious sphere it is Asian (specifically Middle East) with the bulk of people there being Islamic faith.

Istanbul is located on the western end of Turkey and is called the "gateway to Asia".   Most all of Turkey is in Asia.

Turkey is considered an European country, Istanbul and a small part are located in Europe but Turkeys biggest part and it's capital ( Ankara ) are located in Asia.

Turkey is in a place called Asia Minor, or Anatolia. There is no real consensus on where it is. I reckon it is more European than Asian, if you look at the map. But yeah traditionally it has been classed in Asia, but its kinda a gray area today.
