Is US really responsible for the sub prime mortgage crisis?

  1. It's the banks' fault for giving such risky loans.


  2. There are several factors:

    1.  Greedy banks.

    2.  Greedy mortgage brokers.

    3.  Buyers, purchasing more than they could afford.

    4.  The availability of Adjustable Rate Mortgages.

    An individual with subprime credit, signed a ARM and when the rates adjusted they could no longer afford the mortgage.  They screwed up there.  The mortgage broker that offered/sold them the mortgage was greedy and screwed up.  The banks could have chosen not to increase the rates, but did anyway and thus they hurt themselves with their greed, when people could no longer afford the payments.  They screwed up.
