The Ukraine is not in Russia, nor is it in Asia. The Ukraine is part of Europe. It is located in Eastern Europe, next to Russia.

The Ukraine used to be part of the Soviet Union. Russia also used to be part of the Soviet Union. Many people think that Russia and the Soviet Union are the same thing, but they are not. So, although the Ukraine used to be part of the Soviet Union, it was never part of (or in) Russia and it is not located in Asia.

Not to get too technical, Resident Astronomer, but actually, during the 10th and 11th centuries, much of modern-day Ukraine was populated by the Rus' people who formed the largest and most powerful European polity, called the Kievan Rus'.  This early connection between the peoples is one basis for Russia's modern claim to hegemony in Ukraine.  

The name Ukraine comes from a Russian word meaning "border area".
