I was watching McCain and Obama videos in youtube and i noticed a video mccains states US is a christian country and obama says US is no longer a christian country.

I believe US is a secular country like India which consider all religion as equal. So whats the verdict? US is a religious(chrisian) country or Secular?

  1. Technically we are a Christian Nation founded on Biblical Christian principles, but the majority of the people within our country are actually secular in their behavior/ the way they act out their faith.

  2. No

The US has a separation of Church and state, making it technically secular. The separation ensures total religious freedom by not promoting one religion over others much to the consternation of some of its citizens

The USA is a country of high religious diversity, however the largest religion is Christianity

  3. The majority of people in the United States have christian beliefs it is true however we don't declare one religion or another because of all of the sub-culture religions.  Also because there are so many forms of christianity all people don't consider themselves to be christian but catholic or protestant or lutheran.  Some people get offended by being called christian because they consider their religion the best or the one that makes the most sense.

  4. Culturally, much of the basis of things in the USA is Christian, just as India's culture has Hinduism as an underlying basis. The majority of the population is Christian, so in THAT sense, it is a Christian nation.

But religion of any kind is not enforced, endorsed, official, state.

Calling it Christian implies a theocracy, which it has never been. (Think "Iran"--we are not and have never been ruled in that way. Neither has India.)

The USA is a secular country in which religion is important, and in which religion has influenced much of the culture. No one religion is favored over any other, at least not by governmental action, unless you call humanism or secularism a religion.

  5. If you look at it from the standpoint of the number of Christians of all denominations, the majority of Americans are Christians. But there is separation of Church and State, so I do not think when people say it's a "Christian" country in a way that excludes non-Christians it is good. And all religions should be equal, but with the diversity of religions that is hard to do.When people do good things that are based on their belief in Christianity, that is good. But there are a lot of good people of other backgrounds, too. And until recently I would have preferred "Judeo-Christian" because much of our culture is in one way or another from the Bible, even for people who are not believers and the Bible is Judeo-Christian, not only Christian. But since a large number of other religions, such as Islam and Buddhism are now in this country, even Judeo-Christian can cause some people to be offended.

  6. A country with a predominantly christian population.

    The government is secular.
